Orthodontics

Most orthodontic problems are inherited, including jaw size and tooth size. These problems lead to crowding or excess spacing of the teeth. Overbites, underbites, extra or missing teeth, and abnormalities of the jaws and face are also inherited. Other orthodontic problems can be caused by thumb sucking, mouth breathing, and lip sucking. Premature loss of either primary or permanent teeth can also lead to crowding of teeth and the need for orthodontics.

Children should be evaluated for orthodontics as soon as the permanent teeth are erupting into the mouth. However, every child is unique and when or if orthodontic treatment should begin depends on the type of problem and severity of the orthodontic problem.

Early intervention can make a real difference in the ability to treat orthodontic problems. Problems corrected early can help the body lessen the orthodontic problem and make comprehensive treatment easier or unnecessary. If early intervention is not required, you will be scheduled for periodic follow-up exams while the permanent teeth are coming in and the jaws continue to grow.

An orthodontic exam is necessary to determine your specific needs. It includes taking impression of your teeth, photographs of your teeth, face and smile, x-rays of your head and teeth, and a complete and thorough medical and dental health history.
