Periodontal Treatment-Gums

What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It's caused by plaque, the sticky film of food and bacteria that forms constantly on your teeth. You may have gum disease and not even know it because it's generally painless in its early stages.
Consequences of gum disease may include:
a. Permanent tooth loss
b. Higher risk of stroke and heart attack

How does it affect my teeth?
If plaque isn't removed each day with thorough brushing and flossing, it hardens to become tartar or calculus. Only a profession cleaning can remove harmful these harmful deposits. If not removed, bacteria thrive resulting in toxins and the destruction of gum and bone tissue.

What are the symptoms?
a. Red, swollen gums
b. Gums bleed
c. Bad breath
d. Loose teeth
e. Unhealthy smile where gums pull back from teeth
Let us know if any of these symptoms occur. If we diagnose gum disease early, we may be able to prolong the life of your teeth.

What is the treatment?
Treatment depends on the type and severity of the disease. Non-surgical treatment usually involves a special cleaning called Scaling & Root Planning. Used with local anesthetic, this procedure removes plaque and tartar deposits on the tooth & root surfaces. If the tissues do not heal after this procedure, periodontal surgery may be recommended.
